I was intrigued with my first Feldenkrais session with Lisa six years ago in that the pain I had been experiencing in my feet was greatly reduced. Lisa was able to tell just by looking at my body what movements would be helpful and they were. Through Lisa’s keen assessment skills, I learned how and where my body holds tension and what movements would assist in making my body more comfortable. I was fascinated by how my body responded to these gentle, helpful movements by reorganizing itself which meant more comfort for me.
In my years with Lisa I see how she is concerned about the comfort of her clients while at the same time inviting them to move in ways that access the whole body, not just one part. I used to reach for an object with my hand and my arm as a solid unit and I learned through attention how much tension this creates. Now I reach with my shoulders and back also, which increases my comfort.
To my astonishment Lisa also helped me access my brain’s ability to effect changes in my body. For example, if I could do a movement with my right shoulder but not my left shoulder, Lisa would ask if I could imagine myself doing the movement with my left shoulder which I would then do. After doing the movement with my right shoulder my brain would then inform the left shoulder to do the movement and it did! “Feldenkrais magic” as Lisa would say. I discovered that the brain’s ability to imagine changes is powerful indeed!
Lisa is very knowledgeable and continues to advance her skills through the ongoing workshops that she attends but what I really love is that she is so generous in sharing her expertise with her clients in order to empower them. I practice the movements that Lisa teaches me on my own body and I am continually astounded to discover that healing keeps taking place because of the daily attention and integration that Lisa teaches.
Lisa is a healthy balance between encouraging and challenging her clients. She encourages me by pointing to what is possible even when I can’t quite believe it and she challenges me by showing me areas where I might be stuck and invites me beyond that place.
I am so grateful for Lisa and all that she has shared with me about the wisdom of Feldenkrais. My life, not just my body, is dynamically changing and I now experience greater health and a better quality of life. Thank you, Lisa.
